Guides
How long should a pitch deck be?
There is no single right number. The right length depends on whether the deck is read alone or presented, and on how far along the conversation is.
Fixed prices from $1,500 to $10,000. No calls: everything in writing.
Rule of thumb
One point per slide, as many slides as points
Illustration only. Any figures are invented for this sample slide.
Sent ahead, read alone
Ten to twelve slides. The reader gives it a few minutes. Each slide must make sense without you there, so headlines do the talking.
Presented in a first meeting
Twelve to fifteen slides. You are speaking, so slides can carry less text. Leave time for questions; that is where decisions are made.
Later, in-depth review
The same core deck plus an appendix: detailed financials, customer list, product detail, team biographies. The appendix can be as long as it needs to be.
A better test than slide count
Write the one point each slide makes. If two slides make the same point, merge them. If one slide makes three, split it. Then count.
Signs a deck is too long
- Several slides before the reader knows what you do.
- The ask appears after slide twelve.
- You skip slides when presenting.
