How to pitch an idea to a company.

Companies receive ideas every day and act on very few. The ones that get a reply are short, addressed to the right person and clear about what is being asked.

Fixed prices from $1,500 to $10,000. No calls: everything in writing.

First message

Three sentences: problem, idea, ask

Illustration only. Any figures are invented for this sample slide.

1. Check how the company takes ideas

Many large companies publish a submissions policy, and some do not accept unsolicited ideas at all. Read it first. If a formal route exists, use it.

2. Find the person who owns the problem

An idea about packaging goes to whoever runs packaging, not to the chief executive. Look for the team that would be responsible if the idea were adopted.

3. Send a short first message

  • One sentence on the problem, in their terms.
  • One sentence on your idea.
  • One sentence on what you are asking for: a reply, a meeting, a pilot.
  • No attachment in the first message unless invited.

4. Know what you are protecting

An idea alone is difficult to protect. If you have something that can be protected, such as an invention or a design, speak to an intellectual property attorney before you disclose the details. We cannot advise on this.

5. Bring a deck with one ask

If they invite more, send five to eight slides: the problem, your idea, evidence it works, what you bring, and what you want from them. End with a single next step.
